Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, has roots that trace back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"). The Celts, who lived in areas that are now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, marked the end of the harvest season and the start of winter with Samhain. They believed that on the night before the new year (November 1st), the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to return to earth. To ward off these roaming ghosts, people lit bonfires and wore costumes, often made from animal skins.
When Christianity spread, the holiday was integrated into the Church’s calendar. The Catholic Church declared November 1st as All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Day), with the preceding night being "All Hallows' Eve," which eventually became "Halloween." Over time, Halloween evolved, blending pagan and Christian traditions. By the 19th century, European immigrants brought the celebration to North America, where it transformed into a more community-centered event.
Today, Halloween is known for trick-or-treating, costumes, haunted houses, and pumpkin carving, with ancient customs still echoing in the fun and fright of this modern celebration.
